Diabetes mellitus is the medical term for diabetes. Diabetes can damage blood vessels and nerves in the legs and feet. This reduces the feeling, which makes small skin damage less likely to be noticed. As a result, wounds can develop that are difficult to heal. A wound to the feet that arises as a result of diabetes is also called a diabetic foot ulcer.
15% of these patients eventually led to an amputation of (part of) the leg. Acute Charcot neuroosteopathy (ACN) is a relatively rare but serious complication. Due to diabetes, small fractures and changes in the shape of the foot occur.
